We’re taking a look at the debate over early school start times and the science of adolescent sleep needs.

  • Evie Blad - reporter with Education Week and author of a blog about nonacademic issues that affect students' learning. 
  • Dr. Judith Owens - director of Sleep Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is the lead author of the American Academy of Pediatrics statement regarding later start times for schools. She is also on the national board of the Start School Later organization.

  • Erin Bakkom -  Eighth-grade U.S. history teacher at Portsmouth Middle School. She's on a district committee examining earlier start times.
  • Tom Conrad - Superintendent of the Nauset Public Schools in Cape Cod, Mass., and a former high school principal. His district changed its start times several years ago.
