Hillsborough County Attorney Still on Job Despite Action by Attorney General

Hillsborough County Attorney's office

Hillsborough County Attorney Michael Conlon is still on the job, despite an announcement last Friday that the Attorney General was taking over Conlon's office.

Attorney General Gordon MacDonald sent a letter on Friday explaining that he was sending attorneys on Monday to oversee the Hillsborough County Attorney's office after "repeated failures" by Conlon to improve oversight of his staff and communication with local police departments.

But Conlon told NHPR on Monday that he was continuing his duties as an elected official and that the Attorney General's office would simply "support" him.

"I welcome that support [and] any resources to help address the workload and communication issues that have existed for years preceding my tenure," he said.

The Hillsborough County Attorney's Office in Manchester deals with many of the state's most serious criminal cases. Conlon says many of the problems the Attorney General blames him for stem from years of underfunding and understaffing.

The Attorney General's office was not available to clarify the new relationship between their office and the Hillsborough County Attorney.

Note: This developing story will be updated as we learn more.
