Executive Council to Take Up $549K Planned Parenthood Contract

Allegra Boverman for NHPR

The Executive Council this week will take up the issue of state funding for Planned Parenthood, a vote that could have political implications in the race for governor.

Republican Chris Sununu and Democrat Colin Van Ostern sit on the five-member panel that will take up the $549,000 contract for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England at a meeting Wednesday.

Sununu and Van Ostern are among the slate of candidates looking to replace outgoing Democratic Governor Maggie Hassan.

Sununu joined the other two Republicans on the council last summer in rejecting more than six hundred thousand dollars in state contracts for the organization.

At the time, Sununu cited concerns over the ongoing investigation into undercover, edited videos seeming to show Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of fetal tissue from abortions.

No such program exists in New Hampshire.

Van Ostern voted for the contracts last summer, and is expected to do so again this week.

The funding going before the council Wednesday would support clinics at seven locations across the state.
