Offshore Wind Advocates Plan Earth Day Rally For Sununu's Support

US Department of Energy

Offshore wind supporters will mark Earth Day with a rally outside the Statehouse Sunday.

They want Gov. Chris Sununu to request a federal study of the Seacoast's wind potential.

Griffin Sinclair-Wingate, of the group 350 New Hampshire, says generating more clean power in-state will help Granite Staters financially and environmentally. And he thinks offshore wind is a perfect way to do it.

"We're missing out on an incredible economic opportunity,” he says, “and we're also continuing our dependency on fossil fuels, which is having a really negative effect on the world."

Sununu has expressed doubts that offshore wind is cost-effective, but has said he'd support it if residents did, too.

His new 10-year energy policy seeks to put renewables, including wind, on an even playing field with natural gas. It says ratepayers' bills, not the source of energy, should be the priority.

Most other states with offshore wind potential have the federal task force that advocates want Sununu to request, and Massachusetts and Rhode Island are pushing ahead with development.
