Hassan's Final State of the State Likely to Set the Stage for Senate Run

Allegra Boverman for NHPR

Gov. Maggie Hassan will give her last State of the State address Thursday at 1:30 at the State House.

The two-time Governor will finish up her term in November as she pursues a U.S. Senate seat against incumbent Republican Kelly Ayotte.

In Hassan’s previous address to the Legislature, she focused on raising the minimum wage, extending commuter rail and Medicaid expansion.

This year her speech will likely touch on some of the same themes but this time around her remarks will set the stage for her Senate run.

This race will be crucial for Democrats who want to take the U.S. Senate from Republican control.

With this in mind, Hassan will likely tout bipartisan efforts like the passage of a balanced state budget last year, as well as her efforts to address the state’s opioid crisis.

And looking ahead she will likely repeat her calls to continue the state's expanded Medicaid program, which she says is crucial to fighting the drug epidemic. But it's unlikely Hassan will lay out any major undertakings for her final months in office.
