Governor Hassan says she never discussed the details of Richard Schubart's abrupt departure from Exeter's campus in 2011 with her husband, who was Exeter's Principal when Schubart was forced to resign, and chalks up Schubart's appearance in 2012 campaign press release as one of 125 community leaders who had endorsed her as  "a lot of people on lists," and not having specific information that she could have shared with her staff.

Hassan does say she knew something was amiss when Shubert, who has worked at the prep school since 1973, suddenly retired and moved off campus, she did not know specifics she might have shared with her campaign.

"While I sensed something was wrong, because of the teachers abrupt departure from the school, I didn't know and didn't have information that I could have information that I could have passed on that would have allowed us to remove him."

Richard Schubart admitted sexual contact with two students in the 1970s and 1980s. The first allegation came to light in 2011. Exeter reported the incident to authorities and Schubart was forced to resign and moved off campus. When a second incident came to light in 2015, authorities were notified, Schubart lost his faculty emeritus status and was barred from the school's campus.
