Claremont School District Fighting IRS Fines

NHPR Staff

SAU 6, which comprises Claremont and Unity, is facing $320,000 in fines from the IRS. Acting Superintendent Cory LeClair says the IRS is fining the district for non-compliance with the Affordable Care Act.

LeClair blames the error on a former finance officer in the district and says the district is requesting a waiver from the fines.

"We are hopeful that the IRS will recognize that there is no public benefit to diverting local tax dollars intended to fund the education of Claremont and Unity students to pay a federal government penalty," she wrote in a press release.

Claremont is dealing with other financial woes, including failing to get federal reimbursement for school lunches. It's also struggled with superintendent turnover. The district's new superintendent, Michael Tempesta, is expected to start in July.
