Giving Matters: Healing Victims of Domestic Violence

Bridges Domestic and Sexual Violence Support provides free services to victims of sexual and domestic violence, dating violence, harassment and stalking. Emily called Bridges when she and her daughter Brianna needed help.

“A few years back I found out that my children were being sexually assaulted by my husband at the time.” Emily was stunned, “as a mom you feel so guilty, how could I not know, I brought this man into their lives, I thought he was a good person and now I find out all this.”

Emily’s first contact with Bridges came after her daughter told her about the abuse. “I took her to the child advocacy center to meet with detectives.” And it was there that she met a representative from Bridges. “She just sat with me and was there to be my sounding board.”

Bridges offers many avenues of support throughout the legal and emotional travails: group therapy both for victims and for parents of victims. “They gave me a 24-hour hotline I could call, so that when I woke up in the middle of the night there was someone I could vent to.” A Bridges rep was also present at all of the many legal proceedings from court hearings to meetings with the prosecutor, “right up until the plea hearing where he plead guilty to the crime.”

Bridges was equally helpful to Brianna through their teen support group. “We felt like a family when we were together and talking; [Bridges therapists and facilitators] made us feel like we could get through it and not feel so alone in the process of coping with everything that has happened.” She says, “that’s how Bridges has helped me in moving past all this and growing stronger.
