Nationally, only 17% of students who enter community college seeking a bachelor’s degree reach that goal within six years. Today, we learn about a new program in Orlando, Florida that aims to solve the problem of community college attrition. Then, you’re locked in a dark cell with a group of strangers – there’s a zombie on the loose and you’re running out of time…oxygen…and solutions. It’s not a video game, this is real life…and you paid to be there. Welcome to the new trend in adventure recreation: the escape room.

EPA Prices Pollution

How is environmental damage - deemed by a recent SCOTUS ruling to be negligible compared to the cost of installing scrubbers on coal plants - assessed?  Nick Stockton wrote the article “How the EPA Puts a Price Tag on Pollution” for Wired.com, and he explained how the EPA puts a price tag on something like an IQ point.

The Darth Vader Family Courthouse

It’s hard to imagine a place where more desperate and depressing drama unfolds on a daily basis than a family courthouse- custody battles, abuse, divorce - and one building, known to employees as the “Darth Vader building," is notorious for reflecting that misery in its architecture. Roman Mars, producer of the podcast 99% Invisible, brought us the story.

Escape Rooms

“Escape rooms” are popping up everywhere from LA to Sydney. You can experience one of these “live video games” for yourself, but now there’s another option as well. Television viewers can watch these games to survive beginning this month on the Science Channel’s Race to Escape. Rick Paulas wrote about the new series and the rise of escape rooms for Pacific Standard magazine.
