A Massachusetts man has died while hiking Mount Moosilauke.
New Hampshire Fish and Game said Roy Sanford, 66, of Plymouth, Mass., had planned to hike up and back via the Glencliff Trail on Sunday.
Rescuers set out Sunday evening after his family notified authorities around 7 p.m. that he had not returned, but crews encountered blizzard conditions and heavy winds near the south peak, which forced them to make the decision to turn back.
The search team returned Monday to check all trails on the mountain and the New Hampshire National Guard deployed a Blackhawk helicopter to assist in the search and Sanford’s body was soon found.
The Guard airlifted Sanford out and he was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
