Interview Takeaways:

Congressional hopeful Mindi Messmer says environmental issues are a national security concern—and that climate change is the big threat, including to local institutions like the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

"I think that if we don’t prepare for things like sea-level rise we are facing a huge threat to our national security. We’ll see people having to migrate away from coastal areas," she said.

Messmer is one of eight candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District. It is an open seat in 2018.

Speaking today on NHPR's The Exchange, Messmer said she supports a Medicare-For-All program to provide universal access to health care, tuition-free college, and Medicaid expansion as one way to combat the opioid crisis.

Messmer runs an environmental consulting firm and is also a state representative from Rye.
