The Appalachian Mountain Club is withdrawing its proposal for a new overnight hut in Crawford Notch State Park.
The AMC notified the New Hampshire Department of Resources and Economic Development of its decision after more than a year of what the non-profit called ‘careful consideration.’
“While the outcome of this proposal is not as hoped for, we remain fully committed to continuing to provide high-quality outdoor recreational experiences for the citizens of New Hampshire and the visitors to our State, in partnership with New Hampshire State Parks and other resource management agencies,” writes Paul Cunha, AMC’s vice president of outdoor operations, in a letter to the state.
The plans for a 50-occupancy structure drew a mix of public reaction, with opponents concerned about the impact to the natural environment. Supporters said the facility could help attract more tourists to the region.
The AMC operates eight other high-altitude huts in the White Mountains, and says its current facilities are at full capacity, forcing them to turn away interested hikers.
It’s newest facility, the Mizpah Spring Hut, was constructed in 1965.
On Tuesday, the AMC announced plans for a new $13.1 million headquarters in Boston.
