Governor Hassan Signs 'Uber Bill' Into Law

This week Governor Maggie Hassan signed into law new statewide regulations for ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft.

The so-called Uber bill –now the Uber law– requires ride-sharing companies to conduct third-party background checks on drivers and to provide commercial insurance for the vehicles. These requirements largely mirror the existing practices of Uber, which strongly supported the legislation.

The new law does away with the patchwork of ride-sharing regulations that cities like Manchester and Portsmouth had previously passed.

Republican Representative and Transportation Committee Chair Steven Smith sponsored the bill.

“Before you have a transportation company or that type of infrastructure industry move in anywhere, they want to have a regulatory package in place so they know what the rules of the game are.”

The legislation is similar to measures passed in several others states around the country.
