Full N.H. Senate Backs Bill to Create Special Child Advocate Office

A bill that would create a statewide child advocacy office got the full support of the New Hampshire Senate Thursday.

The bill also creates a new associate commissioner position to oversee the Division? of Children, Youth and Families, who would work under the Department of Health and Human Services.

The proposal is in response to a recent outside review that determined the agency was understaffed and lacked proper procedures.

Senator Sharon Carson, who’s the bill’s prime sponsor, said it’s time to fix this.

“We need to get to the bottom of what is going on here in order to fix it and I believe this amendment starts that process," Carson told her colleagues just before it passed on a unanimous voice vote.

Earlier this week Governor Chris Sununu put the head of DCYF on administrative leave for allegedly closing roughly 1,500 cases within a span of two days. The bill now heads to the Senate Finance Committee.
