Familiar Faces Elected As Leaders In N.H. House And Senate

The leaders appointed by the newly elected state Legislature Wednesday are familiar faces.

The House of Representatives, which now holds a Democratic majority, elected Terie Norelli, D-Portsmouth, as the Speaker of the House for the next two-year session.

Norelli served as Speaker of the House from 2006 to 2010. Democrats nominated Norelli for the position again during a caucus in November. Rep. David Campbell, D-Nashua, was also seeking the position.

On the Senate side, Peter Bragdon, R-Milford, was re-elected as the leader by a unanimous vote. The Senate maintained a Republican majority by a slim 13-11 margin.

"Similar to the last two years, I expect the 2013-2014 session on the Senate side will be efficient, transparent and anchored by a no nonsense approach to conducting business for the taxpayers of New Hampshire," Bragdon said in a press release.

Among Bragdon's top priorities for the next session will be to target education aid to the students who need it most and building a balanced budget without new or increased taxes or fees.

Sen. Jeb Bradley, R-Wolfeboro, will serve as majority leader, while Sen. Bob Odell, R-Lempster, will serve as president pro tem. Sen. Sylvia Larsen, D-Concord, will serve as minority leader.
