Update: 22-Year-Old Lebanon Man Arrested in Connection with Shooting Near Dartmouth

Hanover Police arrested 22-year-old Gage Young of Lebanon Saturday afternoon in connection with a shooting Friday night near the Dartmouth College campus.

Young is charged with second-degree assault, a felony, the police said.

"Our preliminary investigation has revealed Mr. Young was traveling through the town of Hanover when he discharged a handgun toward the 19-year-old victim," Hanover Police Chief Charles Dennis said in a statement.

The victim is in stable condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He is not affiliated with the college, Dartmouth officials confirmed.

The shooting took place on the sidewalk outside the Christian Science Reading Room on School Street, one block from the Dartmouth Green.

The College issued a "shelter in place" order after gunshots were reported fired just before 10 p.m. Friday. The order was lifted around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Hanover Police are encouraging anyone who who may have additional information on the shooting to contact the department.

Officers from several surrounding towns, as well as the Grafton County Sheriff Department and New Hampshire State Police, aided in the investigation.

"We are all grateful for the quick actions of first responders on campus and across the region," Dartmouth College President Phil Hanlon said in a statement sent to students, faculty and staff Saturday afternoon. He urged those seeking support to contact on-call deans and counselors.

NHPR's Lauren Chooljian and Britta Greene reported from Hanover.
