Hiker Who Died On Appalachian Trail Identified

A 39-year-old New Hampshire man who had been running and hiking with friends along the Appalachian Trail when he collapsed and died has been identified.

Chad Denning from New London had stopped breathing along the Beaver Brook Trail on Mt. Moosilauke in Benton after noon on Sunday. He had stopped to take in some views of the area after running and hiking for about four hours.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.

The Valley News reports Denning was an avid endurance runner who served as director of recreation departments in Hanover and New London. In 2013, he became the director of high school crews at the Student Conservation Association, a national nonprofit headquartered in Charlestown that carries out restoration projects in national parks.
