Giving Matters: Prescott Farms Gets Kids Outside

The Prescott Farm Environmental Education Centeroffers year-round programs for all ages. Its “Wildquest” camps help connect kids with nature and their local landscapes.

Prescott Farm has always been a landmark for Gretchen O’Neill. “We’re very grateful that our daughter, Gabriella, can come here to attend the camp, or that we can come up and explore it and walk the trails.

Gabriella remembered one trip into the forest as a camper particularly well, “one of the teachers showed us a porcupine den and we saw some scat and quills.”

Gretchen appreciates the hands on approach taken by Prescott and its camp program, “kids are able to get out into nature and get to see wildlife and nature in their natural habitat.” This emphasis on time outside, away from desks and screens of any kind, is additional relief to Gretchen. But the underlying educational aspects are paramount, “it’s not just about nature, but problem solving and working as a team.”

Gretchen remembers one day when Gabriella’s camp group set about building a fort. “They had a plan of how the door on their fort was going to work and it didn’t work so they had to come up with a different idea.” And as Gabriella testifies the fort project was a popular one, “I liked doing it, it’s one of my favorite things to do.”
