Governors from a handful of East Coast states, including New Hampshire, want the federal government to speed up its permitting of the Vineyard Wind project.
The $2.8 billion, 800-megawatt wind farm would be built off the coast of Massachusetts and would be the first commercial-scale wind project in U.S. federal waters.
The Departments of Interior and Commerce said this month they would give the project more environmental scrutiny than was expected, which could result in a delay. If that happens, Vineyard Wind could lose a key federal tax credit that sunsets at the end of this year.
Now, Gov. Sununu has joined the governors of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine and Virginia on a letter asking federal regulators to do what they can to keep the project on schedule.
New Hampshire has expressed increasing interest in the Gulf of Maine's burgeoning wind industry this year.
State officials have said they also see economic potential in making components for other states' wind projects.
