Senator Jeanne Shaheen wants the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to speed up dredging projects for two Seacoast harbors in the coming year.

Shaheen pushed last year for the Corps todredge Hampton Harbor. That project was recently completed.

Now, she says dredging is overdue forRye Harbor and the Piscataqua River, home to the Port of New Hampshire in Portsmouth.

Shaheen asked an Army undersecretary nominee about it at his confirmation hearing today.

"As I'm sure you know, we have many small harbors and rivers across this country that have safety and economic issues around dredging that present a real challenge for the communities and the states that they're in."

The Army nominee, James McPherson, said he's spoken to the Army Corps about making sure those projects are a priority in 2020.

Annie has covered the environment, energy, climate change and the Seacoast region for NHPR since 2017. She leads the newsroom's climate reporting project, By Degrees.
