Governor Chris Sununu vetoed a bill yesterday that would have given local school boards the final say in what learning counts towards a high school diploma.

The Democratic-backed bill was meant to curtail a proposed initiative from the State Board of Education called Learn Everywhere.

Learn Everywhererequires school boards to give high-school credit for out-of-school programs like science clubs and dance classes, even if they don’t meet the local districts’ standards.

Supporters say it gives students more opportunities. Critics say it takes away local control. With the bill now vetoed, Learn Everywhere is one step closer to final approval. It gets a hearing by the Joint Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (JLCAR) next week.
