Senators Seek Small Business Protections on Online Sales Tax

Some U.S. senators, including New Hampshire's Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, want Senate leadership to take action before the end of the year to protect small businesses from red tape following a court decision on collecting sales taxes from online shopping.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling that states can require online retailers to collect sales tax on purchases in states where they don't have a physical presence was a victory for states losing billions of dollars in revenue. But it was a potential blow to New Hampshire, which prides itself on having neither a sales nor income tax.

The senators say states have passed laws requiring out-of-state small businesses to start collecting sales taxes as soon as Jan. 1. In addition to requesting small-business protections, urging a ban on retroactive collection requirements.
