Gittell: Faculty Cuts At NHTI Due To Slumping Tuition Revenue

The chancellor of the state’s community college system says recent cuts in staff at New Hampshire Technical Institute were necessary due to a shortfall in tuition revenue.

Speaking on The Exchange this morning, Chancellor Ross Gittell says the Concord school hasn’t experienced the same type of growth as community colleges in other parts of the state.

“And a decision was made there how to meet the budget without sacrificing the quality of instruction and the quality of programs. And the leadership there has done a very good job and the focus is on the high quality of programs and affordability, so not raising tuition.”

NHTI cut 14 positions heading into the school year.

In November, the school announced another round of staff cuts, eliminating five full-time positions and one part-time position.

Officials with the community college system, which includes seven schools, are seeking an additional $6.4 million in the next biennial state budget, money they say will go toward lowering tuition.
