Soothing Sounds in the Capitol Region

NHPR’s ClassicalNH Expands Over the Air Access

More listeners throughout the Concord area and central New Hampshire can now access NHPR’s classical music service, a calming soundtrack option for home, work or play.

ClassicalNH is NHPR’s classical music service. Service highlights includes programming from the Metropolitan Opera, Boston Symphony Orchestra Summer Series, and Carnegie Hall Live. Up to this point, ClassicalNH has predominantly been transmitted in the Concord area at WCNH 91.5, and WEVO 89.1

Beginning Monday, April 5, the signal will move over permanently to 90.5. With the help of a new signal, NHPR’s listener base for this service will expand from 57,000 people, primarily in the city of Concord and environs, to a potential audience of about 137,000. Listeners from as far as Pittsfield, Franklin, Henniker and Weare will now be able to tune in when they switch on their home or car radios.

“St. Paul’s School in Concord had a small FM station, WSPS, that the school was no longer able to maintain,” said Randy Woods, Director of Technology at NHPR. “The school graciously donated its station license to NHPR, a transfer that was approved by the Federal Communications Commission. Our technology team then installed a new antenna and transmission system, allowing NHPR to utilize this license and thus reach a broader audience.”

The ClassicalNH signal expansion is just one of several technological upgrades and updates being pursued by NHPR. Many of those technological upgrades are made possible by generous supporters and listeners.

NOTE: if you’re a listener, please consider migrating to 90.5 right now as part of your daily routine. In addition, ClassicalNH remains available everywhere via NHPR’s livestream and mobile app.
