Shaheen: Report Of Trump Jr.'s Meeting With Russian Attorney 'Very Troubling'

Jul 10, 2017

New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen says she’s troubled by a report that one of President Trump’s sons met last year with a Russian attorney who promised to provide damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

Shaheen called the report “very troubling.”

The New York Times broke the story Sunday, and Donald Trump Jr. has confirmed the meeting took place in June of 2016, during the heart of his father’s presidential campaign.

Paul Manafort, who was Trump campaign chairman at the time, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner also took part in the meeting.

Speaking to NHPR’s Morning Edition, Shaheen says it’s the initial denials about Trump campaign contacts with the Russians that concern her most.

“The explanation for why this meeting occurred has changed several times since knowledge of the meeting first surfaced. It’s very hard to understand why if there was nothing wrong with what they were doing, why they haven’t been more forthcoming.”

Shaheen said she expects the meeting will be part of independent counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.
