Manchester Monarchs To Fold After 18 Years

The Manchester Monarchs are ceasing operations after 18 years of professional hockey in New Hampshire's largest city.

The minor league hockey team made the announcement in a letter to fans posted to their website Wednesday morning.

The team recently completed its 2018-19 season.

The Monarchs began in 2001 as an AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, playing at what is now known as the SNHU Arena.

The Kings moved the Monarchs to the lower-level East Coast Hockey League in 2015, relocating their AHL team closer to the West Coast. The team has experienced a drop in attendance in recent years.

The New Hampshire Union Leader reported earlier this year that the team was up for sale.
The letter posted this morning doesn't make clear when the team will officially fold.
