The New Hampshire Senate this week approved a proposal to allow political candidates to spend campaign contributions on child care costs.
Supporters say this change will make it easier for young parents to run for elected office. The proposal had drawn criticism from Secretary of State Bill Gardner, who said it would be unfair to donors.
The bill passed the Senate Thursday along largely party lines, with one Republican joining all of the chamber's Democrats to vote in favor. A similar proposal has already passed the New Hampshire House.
The Federal Election Committee last year ruled that candidates for federal office can spend campaign donations to cover childcare expenses.
