Three college students were rescued early Tuesday morning after being stranded on a cliff in the Franconia Notch.
Three rock climbers were rescued early Tuesday morning from the Cannon Cliffs in the Franconia Notch, according to a news release from New Hampshire Fish and Game.
The three men were identified as Jonathan Merritt, age 18, of Lander, Wyoming; Jason Reitman, age 18, of Potomac, Maryland; and Alexander MacMillan, age 19, of Boston, Massachusetts.
The men began climbing the Moby Grape route up Cannon Cliffs about 5:30 a.m. but by 8 p.m. they were not at the top and used a cell phone to call for help since they didn’t have warm enough clothing to spend the night.
A 10-person team from Mountain Rescue Service of Conway was summoned to work with Fish and Game.
“From the top, the search team located the climbers using GPS coordinates from the 911 call and light signals from the stranded men. Mountain Rescue Service volunteers hiked from the summit down to a point where they could lower three rescuers by rope to the climbers' location, where they secured the young men with ropes, and all were lifted to safety about 1:40 a.m.,” the news release said.
Fish and Game said some hikers are forgetting that it gets dark much earlier and getting themselves into trouble.
