Art in Hanover: Dartmouth Opens Main Street Gallery Space

The Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College is opening a new gallery space on Main Street in Hanover on September 16th.  The museum itself is closed until 2019 while it undergoes a major expansion project, but Director John Stomberg and his staff came up with a way to keep the Hood engaged in the community.

Located in a highly visible storefront adjacent to the Nugget Theater, the appropriately dubbed “Hood Downtown” will show global contemporary art, with the stated goal of “bringing art from around the world” to Hanover.

The first exhibit features work by contemporary French photographer LaetitiaSoulier. The Fractal Architectures is a series of images of handcrafted dollhouse-sized constructions populated by humans.  Although the visual themes are maintained throughout, Soulier remakes the sets and manipulates the images post-production.

Much like Alice at the bottom of the rabbit hole, the viewer may perceive the world presented by Soulier to be both miniature and askew, but endlessly fascinating. The exhibit will remain at the gallery through December 11th.
