For the first part of our series, Going Local, we look at the Great North Woods.
The very top of our state, with its small towns and expansive outdoor recreation options, is a region driven by local government, where school funding, access to well-paying jobs, and retention of a sustainable workforce are all big issues.
This show originally aired on July 12, 2018.
GUESTS:
- Charles Jordan - Editor of the Colebrook Chronicle.
- Benjamin Gaetjens-Oleson - Planning and zoning coordinator, grant administrator, and emergency management director for Lancaster. He is also a member of the Lancaster Rotary Club.
- Lisa Perras - Principal at Groveton High School, and lifelong resident of the region.
Recommendations from our guests:
Ben Gaetjens-Oleson recommended several great places to visit for a listener who had never been to the region, and wanted to bring her family.
For hiking, he says the region has one 4000 footer, Mount Cabot, which has a trailhead in Berlin. He also recommends Mount Prospect in Lancaste, and Percy Peaks in North Stratford.
Lisa Perras also recommends visiting the Nash Stream National Forest, which was a favorite of hers growing up.
For other outdoor activities, Gaetjens-Oleson recommends rafting the Androscoggin River from Milan. You can find a few companies that provide guiding and supplies here, here, and here. For year-round adventure on the Androscoggin, visit here.
If you're looking for food and cool shops, Gaetjens-Oleson recommends the Polish Princess Bakery in Lancaster, The Granite Grind in Lancaster.
Charlie Jordan recommends getting in your car and exploring the back roads and historic buildings. Check out this list of historic sites in the area.
