The Ossipee Police Department’s first-ever full-time female officer is suing the town, alleging she was the target of gender discrimination and repeated instances of sexual harassment during her six years with the force.

A five-hour standoff in Ossipee on Thursday ended with a man being shot by police.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's office says police officers were attempting to serve legal documents and to arrest 53-year-old John Swanson at his home in Ossipee.

According to the AG, Swanson refused to come out of his home. He was later shot during a confrontation with police and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The AG says the name of the officer or officers involved in the shooting will be withheld until formal interviews have been conducted.

A new handicap-accessible trail opens Thursday in a rare forest in Ossipee – the first such trail the Nature Conservancy has built in the state.

The walking trail runs through the nonprofit’s Ossipee Pine Barrens and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

A Carroll County judge will soon decide if a lakefront landowner in Ossipee can sell her property to someone other than the town, which wants to turn it into a residents-only beach.

The town's plan to spend $1.2 million on land for an Ossipee Lake beach failed by just a handful of votes at a special town meeting in November. That land is currently a seasonal campground, owned by Dianne Sheehan.

Ossipee residents narrowly voted down spending $1.2 million to create a town beach, which would have been the first on Ossipee Lake in decades.

The contentious plan drew hundreds of people to a packed special town meeting Tuesday night.

Two hundred and ninety-seven residents voted for the beach, while 171 voted no – putting the plan just shy of the two-thirds majority it needed to pass.
