Special Coverage: South Carolina and Super Tuesday Primaries

As part of NHPR’s continuing coverage of key stops on the road to the 2020 U.S. presidential election, NHPR will offer special coverage of the South Carolina primary on Saturday, February 29, and the Super Tuesday primaries on Tuesday, March 3.

Saturday, February 29

6 p.m. – America, Are We Ready? South Carolina Edition

From WNYC comes the latest program in an ongoing series of pop-up, live call-in discussions that lift the voices of callers as the country moves toward the 2020 presidential election. The series is hosted by WNYC’s Brian Lehrer, in collaboration with the Associated Press and local station partners throughout the country. The South Carolina edition will take a look at how the Palmetto State – the first state in the primary cycle with significant African American representation - will serve as a key test for Democratic hopefuls. Brian and guests will talk about what’s at stake and how individual callers are deciding which candidate to support.

7 p.m. - NPR coverage

NPR’s special coverage of the primary starts at 7 p.m. on NHPR, and is expected to run until at least 9 p.m. NPR’s Michel Martin and Sarah McCammon will serve as co-hosts, and will be joined by members of the NPR Politics team, newsmakers and other guests. Live From Here and Milk Street Radio will not air Saturday evening.

Tuesday, March 3

Super Tuesday primaries will take place throughout the country in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia.

Special coverage starts on NHPR at 7 p.m., with America, Are We Ready? Super Tuesday Edition. Host Brian Lehrer and his guests will talk about the high stakes in play on Super Tuesday, when roughly one-third of the U.S. votes in primaries that day.

At 8 p.m., special coverage begins from NPR and is expected to run until at least 1 a.m. NPR’s Ari Shapiro, Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Steve Inskeep and David Greene will rotate as hosts throughout the evening. They’ll be joined by members of the NPR Politics team, newsmakers and other guests for discussion and analysis.
