Strafford County and Southern Maine residents are rallying to support families affected by a deadly fire in the Maine town of Berwick earlier this month.
Officials say Berwick Fire Capt. Joel Barnes, 32, died saving the lives of other firefighters at the four-alarm apartment fire in Berwick, just over the state line from Somersworth.
Fifteen fire departments from both states responded to the fire, which is still under investigation.
Since then, flags have flown at half-staff around the area, and signs outside nearby fire departments have paid tribute to Barnes.
Donations have poured in for Barnes’ family and the eight tenants of the building who were displaced in the fire.
The Berwick Winter Farmer’s Market will accept non-perishable food items and gift cards for the victims this Sunday. It’s at Berwick Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
