New Hampshire spends more money per pupil on public schools than most states, but is average when it comes to teacher salaries.
That's according to annual data released by the National Education Association, the country's largest teachers union.
New Hampshire spends about $17,400 per pupil.
Most of this is paid for by local property taxes; in fact, New Hampshire relies more than any other state on local property taxes to foot the bill for public education.
In spite of the high per-pupil spending, the state's average starting salary for teachers is $39,990, lower than all New England states except Maine. Average overall salary for teachers in New Hampshire is $59,622.
