California Congressman Adam Schiff, one of President Trump's most prominent critics on Capitol Hill, spoke at Politics and Eggs at Bedford Village Inn.
Schiff spoke at length about the dangers of authoritarianism, and the effect social media has on politics. But when the question about his plans for 2020 was put to the congressman, he was blunt.
"I'm not running."
But Schiff, who leads the House intelligence committee, said he plans to take whatever action is needed, including issuing subpoenas, to ensure that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian election interference is made public.
Schiff's committee this week will question Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen. Schiff says one focus will be the Trump organization's effort to build a Trump tower in Russia.
"What we want to know from Michael Cohen is what can you tell us about that deal? You have admitted and pled guilty about making false statements about that deal, what can you tell us about other potential financial entanglements?”
Cohen's closed-door meeting with Schiff's committee is scheduled for Friday.
