Women's Health Providers Say Impasse After Sununu's Budget Veto Will Hurt Patients

Allegra Boverman for NHPR

Local health care providers facing the loss of federal money beacuse of Trump administration rules on abortion say their patients will be hurt by the state budget impasse.

Top Democratic budget writers say that’s one reason they want a quick resolution with Governor Sununu, who vetoed their budget last week.

One thing the vetoed state budget included was $3.2 million to supplant federal money lost to providers who perform abortions or abortion referrals.

Sabrina Dunlap of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England says federal money makes up about a quarter of their budget, and that will affect patients seeking STD tests, cancer checks, and contraception.

"It hurts people, and New Hampshire has enjoyed a pretty lengthy history of good public health outcomes and without the back-fill funding, the program will be completely undermined."

Democratic budget writers say Sununu's insistence on keeping business tax cuts that took effect in January is wrong, and they challenged him to be specific about what he would cut from their budget.

I cover campaigns, elections, and government for NHPR. Stories that attract me often explore New Hampshire’s highly participatory political culture. I am interested in how ideologies – doctrinal and applied – shape our politics. I like to learn how voters make their decisions and explore how candidates and campaigns work to persuade them.
