A proposal to build a performing arts center in downtown Nashua got a shot of support from local voters Tuesday.

The $15.5 million project was rejected by city aldermen in September. But the board decided to let residents weigh in on the proposal.

And on Tuesday’s ballot – voters supported it by a more than 150 vote margin.

Resident Michael Watt has been canvassing to rally support for the project

“We are very tremendously happy – all the hard work paid off," Watt said after the results were in. "Every single volunteer, every door knock and every phone call really mattered in this one.”

But even if residents want the center, it’s still up to the board of aldermen to agree to pay for it - something that’s far from certain.
