Sununu Asks Homeland Security to Lift Deportation Order for Indonesian Immigrants
Gov. Chris Sununu met with U.S. Homeland Security officials while in Washington on Thursday to discuss the nearly 70 Indonesians facing deportation from their home in New Hampshire.
Sununu wrote a letter earlier this week, calling on President Trump to reconsider his decision to deport the immigrants who have lived in Dover since the 1990s.
He said he pushed for Homeland Security to lift the deportation order during the meeting.
He said this is not an issue of illegal immigration.
“They came here through a valid, legal process, and we need to make sure that our system can stand up and support them in getting long-term residency,” Sununu said.
The Indonesians say they fear religious persecution in their home country. The deportations are currently on hold, pending the ruling of a federal judge in Boston.
