Conway Workshop Offers Free Well Water Testing

People in Conway can get their well water tested for free this weekend and learn more about water quality.

Nearly half of New Hampshire residents get their water from a private well – one of the highest rates in the country.

In places like Conway, that number is closer to 80 percent. And there's no state requirement for homeowners to regularly test their water for contaminants.

"It's out of sight, out of mind,” says Tara Schroeder, education coordinator for Green Mountain Conservation Group. “You don't see what's happening under the ground."

Schroeder is hosting a workshop on well water testing Saturday in Conway.

"We do the chemistry with them, and they bring their water sample with them,” she says.

Residents will get results for six common parameters, like chloride, p-H and iron.

Schroeder has held these water quality trainings in schools for years, but Saturday’s will be the second training open to the public.

Schroeder hopes it'll get people thinking about screening more often for contaminants like arsenic and uranium that can occur naturally and require a special lab test.
