Young Child in Newport Dies After Spending Hours Outside Overnight

Newport Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl early Monday morning.

Police Chief Jim Burroughs said it appears the girl left the house, wearing only pajamas, and became trapped outside.

Neighbors heard cries around 4 a.m., but couldn't see anything outside in the dark, he said. Temperatures fell below zero overnight.

Emergency responders were called to the area shortly after 7 a.m. They found the girl dead at the scene.

Chief Burroughs said the family recently moved to the house from outside the area.
