Author Gives $300,000 to Star Island for Building Upgrades

Officials say New Hampshire's Star Island in the Isles of Shoals is receiving a $300,000 gift that will help preserve two older buildings and help establish a fishermen exhibit.

The Portsmouth Herald reports the donation comes from Virginia author Lois Williams, who wrote "Religion at the Isles of Shoals." The Williams family has been coming to the island since 1975.

The nonprofit Star Island Corporation has owned the 43-acre island since 1915.

Williams says the gift will help upgrade a cottage that houses the Celia Thaxter Museum and renovate the building housing Rutledge Marine Lab. It will also create a large wall display on the early history of the Isles of Shoals.

Star Island hosts conferences, family camps, and short-stay programs focused on topics including history, science and culture.
