Commission Finalizes Plan That Supports Medicaid Expansion In N.H.

Brushing up against its October 15th deadline, on Tuesday a special commission studying a possible expansion of Medicaid in New Hampshire finalized its recommendations.

This was the final meeting of a nine-member group that spent the summer debating if and how to expand Medicaid to more low income residents.

While the issue still proves divisive, the commission did find common ground accepting the contents of the final report, voting unanimously to send it to the Governor and legislative leaders.

The 100-plus page report includes a majority-backed plan that calls for expanding Medicaid eligibility to individuals earning up to about $15,000 a year. Any newly eligible people who currently have health insurance through their jobs would stay on those plans.

The document also includes recommendations from the commission’s minority.

Any proposal still needs the approval of both the House and Senate.

Governor Maggie Hassan, who backs expansion, says she’ll call for a special legislative session to start November 7th.

As a general assignment reporter, I pursue breaking news as well as investigative pieces across a range of topics. I’m drawn to stories that are big and timely, as well as those that may appear small but tell us something larger about the state we live in. I also love a good tip, a good character, or a story that involves a boat ride.
