Special Programming: Weekend Listens from StoryCorps/NPR, PRX, and American Public Media

Conversational techniques that bridge differences, a deep look into how the Latino electorate is influencing our national politics, and a Halloween showcase of poetry and performance will all be heard on the New Hampshire Public Radio airwaves this weekend.

Starting Friday evening, join NHPR for three new specials by our public media partners:

  • One Small Step: Courageous Conversations Across A Growing Divide from NPR & StoryCorps will air on Friday, October 30 from 9 to 10 p.m.
  • The World's Every 30 Seconds election special by PRX will air on Friday, October 30 from 7 to 8 p.m.
  • Selected Shorts: Hauntings for Halloween from American Public Media airs on Saturday, October 31 from 8 to 9 p.m.

One Small Step is an initiative pairing people of differing political views, encouraging respectful conversations rooted in shared humanity. One Small Step explores the issue of “agreeing to disagree” during this time in American history in the final weeks of a contentious presidential election, StoryCorps and NPR member stations around the country invited people to take One Small Step to better understand those with whom they may disagree.

This hour-long radio special from NPR and StoryCorps, along with member station WBHM in Birmingham, Alabama, will tell the story of this one effort to create space for conversation. Host Elise Hu will guide listeners through conversations with StoryCorps founder Dave Isay, expert guests, and the highlights of a live stage presentation in Birmingham, one of the first cities to undertake the One Small Step project.

Aired in The World’s usual time slot on Friday, Every 30 Seconds is a collaborative public media reporting project following the young Latino electorate leading up to the 2020 presidential election and beyond. The project reports on the issues, influences, concerns and challenges driving decision-making and turnout among young Latino voters across the United States.

According to The World, approximately every 30 seconds, a young Latino in the United States turns 18, or voting age. Overall, 32 million Latinos are projected to be eligible to vote in the 2020 presidential election, making them the largest share of minority voters for the first time.

From The World's newsroom in Boston, senior editor Daisy Contreras leads the production of stories for this national broadcast, in partnership with public radio stations across the country. Digital editor Tania Karas leads the production of digital stories and interactives.

Stations contributing to Every 30 Seconds will include:

  • KERA in Dallas, Texas;
  • KJZZin Phoenix, Arizona;
  • KPBS in San Diego, California;
  • KUOW in Seattle, Washington;
  • WABE in Atlanta, Georgia;
  • WLRN in Miami, Florida;
  • WUNC in Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Finally, on the evening of Halloween, Emmy-nominated actress Kate Burton will host the Selected Shorts: Hauntings for Halloween special.

The broadcast will present some chilling tales and poems, the perfect soundtrack to put listeners in a haunting mood. The special is an encore program from 2019.

The stories will include:

  • Edgar Allan Poe is haunted by a childhood memory in Russell Banks’ “The Caul,” performed by Richard Masur.
  • A dying emperor tries to communicate in “An Imperial Message,” by Franz Kafka, performed by New York-based theater artist Kaneza Schaal.
  • And Agatha Christie tells a ghost story in “The Lamp,” performed by the British-Indian actress and theater producer Rita Wolf.

Selected Shorts is one of public media’s longest-running cultural programs, offering short fiction in performance by distinguished actors from stage, screen, television and audio.
