New Hampshire Enters State Budget Season With Healthy Balance Sheet

josh rogers / nhpr

With overall state tax collections up $106 million over estimates, Legislative Budget Assistant Michael Kane told the New Hampshire lawmakers who will write the state's next two-year spending plan that they will start the process with a $95.8 million cushion.

"Of that $95.8 million, about $74 million of that is the general fund; the other 28.1 roughly, is the education trust. So the education trust fund, for the first time in a over a decade, has a positive balance."

But Kane also stressed that the budget picture could change, based on the national economy. Right now, the state's rainy day fund is also in good shape. It contains $11o million.

I cover campaigns, elections, and government for NHPR. Stories that attract me often explore New Hampshire’s highly participatory political culture. I am interested in how ideologies – doctrinal and applied – shape our politics. I like to learn how voters make their decisions and explore how candidates and campaigns work to persuade them.
