New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is on her way back to the United States, having left Brussels the day before deadly explosions happened at the city's airport and metro station.

Shaheen had departed for Brussels last Thursday to take part in a forum with North American and European leaders on transatlantic security challenges. A spokesman said she left Brussels on Monday to take part in meetings in Estonia, where her schedule included learning about programs to enhance the capabilities of NATO members and their partners in cyber defense through education, research and development.

She was returning to the United States on Tuesday.

In a statement, Shaheen said the attacks underscore the continued need for close cooperation with NATO and the European Union to improve collective abilities to track down terrorists.
