CULTURAL SERIES AT THE COLONIAL: MAHJONG AND CHICKEN FEET, BETHLEHEM
Friday September 27 5PM Colonial Theatre, 2050 Main Street. Sponsored by Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation. Filmmaker Jacqueline Levitin, a professor in Film and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University, takes viewers with her on a journey to China as she seeks her family’s past. Out of reach of the tsar’s pogroms, her ancestors’ Russian-Jewish community thrived in Manchuria; however, her cultured, European-leaning 20th century Jewish ancestors were unaware of another Chinese-Jewish community that long preceded them - the 1000-year-old community of Kaifeng in the heart of ancient imperial China. This documentary takes viewers on an unforgettable adventure. The film will be introduced by Hebrew University School of the Arts Professor Edwin Seroussi. Discussion follows the film. For further information contact Cantor Marlena Fuerstman: 603-869-5465 or marlena1st@gmail.com or visit www.bethlehemsynagogue.org.

In our contemporary lore an orca whale is like a two-faced Janus—beloved as a majestic, friendly giant yet infamous for its capacity to kill viciously. Blackfish unravels the complexities of this dichotomy, employing the story of notorious performing whale Tilikum, who—unlike any orca in the wild—has taken the lives of several people while in captivity.
