Filmmaker Jacqueline Levitin, a professor in Film and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University, takes viewers with her on a journey to China as she seeks her family’s past. Out of reach of the tsar’s pogroms, her ancestors’ Russian-Jewish community thrived in Manchuria; however, her cultured, European-leaning 20th century Jewish ancestors were unaware of another Chinese-Jewish community that long preceded them - the 1000-year-old community of Kaifeng in the heart of ancient imperial China. This documentary takes viewers on an unforgettable adventure. The film will be introduced by Hebrew University School of the Arts Professor Edwin Seroussi. Discussion follows the film. The revue, conceived by Todd Olsen and David Grapes, was first performed at Artpark, Lewiston, N.Y. in 1999. Since then, it has become one of the most popular musical revues in the United States, mounted by professional and amateur theatre groups alike. It features a vocal quartet -- two men, two women -- backed by an on-stage jazz trio. The focus is, of course, Sinatra -- his prolific life and career, most particularly the nearly 1,400 songs (57 of them in this production) that 'Ol Blue Eyes recorded.
