Searchers Spend Night Looking For Littleton Man

A Littleton man hiking without a flashlight, map or warm clothing spent the night in the mountains while officials looked for him, according to a news release from New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Dylan Jessen, 20, planned to hike the 15 miles from the Lafayette Campground in Franconia to Route 112 in Woodstock but didn’t begin until about 1 p.m.

His mother lost cell-phone contact with him about 7 p.m.  when he still had about five miles to go and only 30 minutes of daylight left.

By 11 p.m. his mother called for help.  Fish and Game conservation officers as well as members of the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team and Appalachian Mountain Club responded.

They searched throughout the night but didn’t find him.

He had apparently found a dry spot off the trail and gone to sleep. He walked out of the woods just before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Lt. James Kneeland, of Fish and Game, said the “incident is a reminder that, as the warm spring weather inspires people to get out and enjoy hiking, it is critical to allow ample time for your hike, and to always be prepared for an unplanned overnight by taking proper equipment, including warm clothing and a light source."
