Ending Speculation About A U.S. Senate Run, Sununu Says He'll Seek A Third Term

Governor Chris Sununu made his announcement through a Medium post. He said after taking a deep look at what he termed his path of public service he concluded: “Nothing is more critical to our state’s future than ensuring strong leadership in the Corner Office and saving our New Hampshire Advantage.”

Some state and national Republicans wanted Sununu, who polls show is one of the most popular governors in the country, to take on Sen. Jeanne Shaheen as she seeks a third term in Washington.

Last week, Sununu told Fox news he’d beat Shaheen if he ran and he said New Hampshire's senior senator “jumped the shark in terms of putting New Hampshire first. That ship has long sailed.”

Sununu repeated the claim he’s could beat Shaheen in his Medium post but said "others can too.”

He also took aim Democrats in the statehouse, claiming their agenda “has become more radical than any of us ever believed possible.”

In a statement, Democratic Party chairman Ray Buckley said, “While we regret missing the opportunity to retire Chris Sununu in a campaign for U.S. Senate, we look forward to replacing him as governor in 2020."
