New Hampshire U.S. Attorney John Kacavas is leaving the post he's held for six years to become chief legal officer and general counsel for Dartmouth-Hitchcock health systems.

A Dartmouth-Hitchcock spokesman says Kacavas will join the health network April 20. His resignation as U.S. Attorney — announced Thursday — is effective April 17.

Hospital officials say he will oversee government relations, risk management and claims management.

Kacavas was nominated by President Barack Obama and sworn in as U.S. Attorney in August 2009.

He convicted offenders such as John Allen Wright, a school bus driver who videotaped himself sexually assaulting several autistic boys. Wright was sentenced to 160 years in prison.

Kacavas also prosecuted David Kwiatkowski, who stole painkillers and infected dozens of patients with hepatitis C through tainted syringes.
