Senate lawmakers have passed a bill that would ban the use of hand-held cell phones while driving.
The bill passed by a voice vote, and now heads back to the House to consider an amendment that would require education for the public about the new law.
If passed, the ban would go into effect sometime next year.
The House already passed an earlier version of the bill.
The law would allow adults to talk on a cell phone if they’re using a hands-free device.
The ban would apply to drivers stopped at a red light, but not to those who have pulled over and stopped. The law would not apply in the case of emergencies.
Under the law, minors would be banned from any cell phone use while driving.
